Swedged Anchor Bolts

A swedged anchor bolt is typically an anchor rod, threaded on the projecting end, that has indentions along the smooth portion of the rod below the threads. These indentations on the embedded end allow the swedged anchor bolt to grip the concrete, grout, or epoxy, ensuring it does not pull out of the foundation. It can also be referred to as a swedged anchor rod since the configuration is always a straight rod.

Swedged anchor bolts can either be cast in place or epoxied in an open cavity in the concrete. It is a common alternative to epoxy all thread anchor rods that act similarly. The swedged dimples must be pressed into the rod, displacing the material rather than machining and removing the material. An engineer may specify the dimensions or patterns for the swedging but often does not.

There are no industry standards for swedged anchor bolts. Portland Bolt offers a “standard” alternating pattern if not specified and a spiral pattern that some Departments of Transportation require, but we can also manufacture a custom pattern if required. *The Engineer of Record should confirm the pattern before ordering.

Swedged Anchor Bolt Uses

Swedged anchor rods are used almost exclusively on Department of Transportation highway projects, specifically for anchoring bridge bearings. These anchors are often referred to in an AASHTO M-314 specification and are frequently required to be 100% domestic with full certification documents. We automatically email these documents once the order for swedged anchor bolts has shipped.

Swedged anchor rods are typically hot-dip galvanized since they used on bridges where they are exposed to the elements. The zinc coating of a hot-dip galvanized anchor rod will protect the swedged anchor bolt from corrosion.
